Barome is an older woman who suffered from a fistula for 20 years. She has six children and comes from a remote area where fishing provides her only income. Barome was lucky to have a supportive husband and family throughout her years of suffering.
At the Aberdeen Fistula Centre in Sierra Leone, every woman gets to make her own beaded necklace before she goes home. Barome amused the staff by asking them every morning if “today was the day to make her necklace.” On the day that she finally made her necklace, the normally serious Barome was full of smiles.
